5 Reasons Motorcycle Gloves Are Essential

Everyone knows you should always wear a helmet when riding your motorcycle, and that sturdy skid-resistant clothes and other protective gear is important. But not everyone realises just how important motorcycle gloves are. Even on hot days when your fingers feel like greasy little sausages, keep them on. Here are five reasons why: 

1. Just Get a Grip

Gloves offer a more even and reliable grip on your bike’s handlebars than your bare hands, and this helps with everything from cornering to, well, not falling off. Particularly in the rain or in summer when you may be sweating, good quality gloves will ensure you maintain a solid grip. This gives you the confidence to ride in all conditions. Most gloves feature silicone pads that ensure a safe grip at all time.

2. Protect Your Hands from Debris

Even if you don’t fall off your bike, your hands are still at risk if they are naked. Rocks, gravel, or other objects kicked up by your bike or cars can hurt or even damage your hands at speed. Considering your hands are both controlling your bike and helping to keep a grip, it makes sense to provide a protective layer for them with good sturdy gloves.

3. Don't Go Numb

Riding in cold weather with bare hands can lead to them becoming absolutely freezing. Not only is this very unpleasant, but it can actually lead to your hands becoming numb and losing some functionality.

You need to be able to feel your hands in order to operate your bike correctly, so this can be pretty dangerous. Good motorcycle gloves will have padding to keep your hands warm in frigid weather so you can ride in comfort and safety.

4. Protect Your Hands So They Can Protect You

In any fall, our instinct is to throw out our hands in order to catch ourselves and protect more important parts from taking the brunt of the fall. It is a smart way to protect your head and other areas of your body that are more precious. If you want to protect your body, your first defence is your hands – if you don’t want them getting mangled in the process, wear your riding gloves.

5. All Safety Gear at All Times

Just because you’re ducking down to the shops and not riding up a mountain, that is no reason to be lax about your safety gear. As a motorbike rider, you are inherently more vulnerable to accidents and to serious injuries resulting from those accidents. Even if you are just making a short ride, kit up – and that includes wearing your gloves on every ride.
